What is roller derby?

Roller derby is an exciting full-contact sport played on quad roller skates. Each team sends five skaters at a time onto an oval-shaped track, with one skater designated as the "jammer" by the star on her helmet cover. The jammer scores points by passing each skater on the opposing team. The other skaters, called "blockers", help their jammer get through while also trying to stop the opposing jammer from passing them. This interplay between offense and defense makes the sport fascinating to watch.

Although roller derby has existed in various forms since 1935, the modern version was created in the early 2000's as a legitimate sport. The hits are all real, not staged, and bouts have no predetermined outcome. Some leagues still use a traditional banked track, but the introduction of flat track roller derby has led to its adoption by over 1000 leagues worldwide.
